For professionals who want to bring creative, experiential approaches into their work with adult clients, within a person-centred and trauma-informed framework.

Your Certificate Pathway
The programme consists of six three-day modules. Complete at least five, including the compulsory Foundations and Integration modules, to work towards Expressive Therapies Australia’s Certificate in Expressive Therapies with Adult Clients.
- Complete at least five of the six modules, including Foundations and Integration.
- Attend at least 15 training days, with no more than 10 hours’ absence.
- Complete the required end-of-module assessments.
- Submit a 1,500-word reflective essay and a case study.
- Meet the relevant professional eligibility requirements.
Individual modules may also be attended for professional development, subject to module-specific entry requirements.

Three-day moduleFoundations: An introduction to Expressive Therapies and Symbol WorkExplore module
Build a foundation for creative, person-centred work with adult clients, combining theory with practical session skills.
What you will explore
- History, research and theoretical frameworks for Expressive Therapies.
- The five-stage session-planning model and multiple intelligences.
- Using miniatures to explore conversations, visual metaphors and emotional experience.
- Therapeutic relating, self-reflection and somatic awareness.
Participation & pathway
Foundations is compulsory for the certificate. Starting here is strongly recommended if you have no previous Expressive Therapies experience.
Three-day moduleArt, Claywork, Photography, Music: Creative Expression in TherapyExplore module
Explore creative media as ways for clients to communicate experiences and develop emotional awareness.
What you will explore
- Clay, photography, colour, line and shape in therapeutic expression.
- Visual art and spontaneous self-expression.
- Music, guided imagery and rhythm for emotional literacy and awareness.
- Mandalas for grounding and self-discovery.

Three-day moduleTherapeutic Writing: Words, Metaphors and PoemsExplore module
Use reflective writing and metaphor to support self-understanding in individual or group therapy.
What you will explore
- Developing writing prompts that support client goals.
- Autobiographical reflection and significant life stages.
- Metaphor, poetry and language as tools for self-exploration.
- Combining writing with art, music and movement in person or through telehealth.
Participation & pathway
No previous creative or therapeutic writing experience is required. An additional 1,500-word essay is required for the separate ETA Certificate in Therapeutic Writing.
Three-day moduleEnhancing Couple and Family ConnectionsExplore module
Explore creative ways to support communication, shared understanding and resilience within couples and families.
What you will explore
- Principles of couple and family therapy and relationship support.
- Sharing different perspectives and involving young people.
- Bonding games, music and poetry for family connection.
- Symbol Work and timelines for exploring couple relationships.

Three-day moduleThe Inward Arc: Spirituality, Mindfulness and Self-CompassionExplore module
Explore meaning, spiritual perspectives and compassionate self-awareness within therapeutic practice.
What you will explore
- Transpersonal perspectives and sensitivity to cultural and spiritual differences.
- Nature symbolism, dreamwork and embodied exploration of dream symbols.
- Mindfulness and meditation for grounding and centring.
- Self-compassion and meaning-making across the therapeutic journey.
Participation & pathway
Check the selected intake for prerequisites before registering. This workshop counts towards the Adults certificate.
Three-day moduleEmotion and Somatic-Focused Awareness through Expressive TherapiesExplore module
Deepen awareness of emotion and bodily experience through creative, experiential approaches.
What you will explore
- Emotion and sensation in therapeutic change.
- Working with challenging emotions and reactivity.
- Body awareness and dialogue with physical symptoms.
- Bioenergetics, rhythm, movement and relaxation strategies.
Participation & pathway
May be attended as a standalone workshop and counts towards the Adults certificate. Confirm the designated Integration module with us when planning your certificate pathway.
