Expressive Therapy offers an integrative, activity-based approach to counselling that supports self-discovery, insight, and internal change. Grounded in a client-centred and multi-modal framework, it values the personal meanings, symbols, and interpretations that emerge uniquely for each client.
Developed by Dr Mark Pearson and Dr Helen Wilson, these specialised advanced trainings are designed for counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists, social workers, allied health professionals, and coaches who support adult mental health and wellbeing.
The course introduces the key theories, principles, methods, and evidence base required to apply Expressive Therapies effectively with adult clients.
The Expressive Therapies Australia (ETA) approach evolved from Creative Arts Therapies and weaves together creative processes with person-centred, emotion-focused, somatic, gestalt and transpersonal perspectives, delivered through a trauma-informed lens. Informed by research literature and clinical insights drawn from over 70 years of combined practice, the course integrates theory, experiential learning, and skills-based training to support confident, ethical, and responsive therapeutic practice.

While the focus of this course is professional development, it provides opportunities for participants to gain in self-awareness and personal growth. Experiences in the client role during the workshops provide a rich experience of the inner world that can enhance participants’ professional relational effectiveness. A practitioners’ own growth has a direct influence on clients’ growth. Developing deeper self-awareness greatly improves the way we relate professionally, and care for ourselves personally.
