This three-day training is designed to equip you with the skills to incorporate Expressive Therapies into couples and family counseling. Participants will gain knowledge on how to encourage couples and families to participate in creative expressive, somatic-focused activities, symbol work, and role-play as integral components of their counseling journey. Working within various schools of family and couple therapy participants will learn to incorporate diverse interventions into their existing family or couples-based training to navigate the emotionally-charged atmospheres often encountered in family and couples’ sessions. By incorporating methods that foster deeper self-reflection and emotional awareness, this expressive therapies training aims to bring more clarity to interpersonal dynamics and promote the development of positive relationships.
The curriculum integrates evidence-based approaches from Emotion-Focused Therapy, Experiential Family Therapy, and research insights from the Gottman method. While expressive and creative counseling methods are shown to benefit clients of all ages, this training specifically covers effective ways to involve children in family sessions. There is also a dedicated focus on helping couples understand how family-of-origin experiences and attachment patterns can impact their current relationships. The goal is to provide therapists with practical tools to assist their clients’ cultivation of experiential understanding, motivating the development of new and positive ways of relating.
